It is academically and stylistically sound to censor/edit any term you deem offensive. WIS does not have a policy on this (yet!), but our history teachers recommend that you edit any words you feel are offensive or harmful to others.
Use the first letter of the word, capitalized in whatever way it would be if used as a whole word, then add dashes to indicate censoring.
If School is the word we want to censor, School becomes S----- or S--
Some writers use the same number of dashes as there are letters in the word. (School would be S with five dashes) Others only use two dashes: S--. Both are correct.
Censoring Within a Quote
If censoring within a quote, use brackets after the first letter then put the dashes in the brackets.
Uncensored: "They referred to the crumbling building as a 'school,' further marking its diminished importance to the cause"
Censored: "They referred to the crumbling building as a 's[-----]', further marking its diminished importance to the cause"
