Tricky Citations

Directions

In MLA, the very first "block" in the citation goes in the parenthetical (in-text) citation. Sometimes that is the author; other times it is a title.

If multiple sources have the same author, include words from the title until the reader can distinguish between the sources.

In-Text Citation + Info

(Author) + "Title" = (Author "Title")

Example Source Citations

Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. "Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)." Animal Disease Information: Cattle, U.S. Department of      Agriculture, 17 Oct. 2023, www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/cattle-disease-information/cattle-bse/cattle-bse. Accessed 5 Mar. 2024

-- "Swine Disease Information." Animal Disease Information: Swine, U.S. Department of Agriculture, 2 June 2020,         www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/swine-disease-information. Accessed 5 Mar. 2024.

Example In-Text Citation

(Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) + "Bovine" // (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) + "Swine"

Finished Example

...this is the end of my paraphrase of the source (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service "Swine"). And now I'm going to put in a quote about the other source. "See how smart this sounds," (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service "Bovine").

Exception

If the titles start with the same word, include more words until the titles are different.

e.g. you have two articles with the same author and the same starting words in the title.

Author: Jemsby

Title 1: "It Starts with a Bang!"

Title 2: "It Starts with an Oops!"

e.g. (Jemsby "It Starts with a") and (Jemsby "It Starts with an")
